The History of Roulette: From Pascal's Wheel to On-Chain Spins

Roulette is the rare casino game whose origin story runs through a genius physicist, a pair of scheming brothers, a principality saved from bankruptcy, and a Victorian engineer who beat the wheel with a notebook. Pascal's beautiful failure

The wheel's most-told origin story starts in 17th-century France with Blaise Pascal — mathematician, physicist, and, fittingly, co-founder of probability theory. Pascal was chasing a perpetual-motion machine, a device that could spin forever without an external energy source. Physics says no such machine can exist, and Pascal's experiments duly failed — but the finely balanced, low-friction spinning wheel his tinkering produced survived as a gaming device. The irony is perfect: the man who, in correspondence with Fermat, laid the mathematical foundations for calculating gambling odds also left behind the hardware for the ultimate game of chance. Roulette likely also absorbed features of earlier games such as the English even-odd wheels and the Italian game biribi, but the spinning-wheel mechanism is Pascal's accidental gift.

1796: the wheel takes its modern form in Paris

Roulette — French for little wheel — was being played in Paris by the late 18th century, and a 1796 description in the novel La Roulette, ou le Jour by Jacques Lablee captures a wheel already recognizably modern, installed at the Palais Royal, with pockets reserved for the bank that gave the house its mathematical advantage. Early French wheels carried both a zero and a double zero, with the zero colored red and the double zero black — a detail that caused enough confusion that green was soon adopted for the house pockets. Through the early 1800s the game spread with French emigres and fashionable society across Europe and over the Atlantic, double zeros and all.

The Blanc brothers and the single zero

In 1843, Francois and Louis Blanc made the single most important commercial decision in roulette history. Operating the casino in the German spa town of Bad Homburg and needing to lure players away from rival houses, they deleted the double zero, cutting the house edge from 5.26% to 2.70%. Players did the math with their feet, and Bad Homburg boomed. When Germany outlawed gambling in the 1860s, Francois Blanc accepted an invitation from the House of Grimaldi to take over the struggling casino at Monte Carlo, in a Monaco desperate for revenue. Under Blanc, Monte Carlo became the most glamorous gambling destination on earth and the single-zero wheel became the European standard — which is why single-zero roulette is called European or French roulette to this day.

America keeps the double zero

Roulette crossed the Atlantic through New Orleans and rode the Mississippi riverboats into the American interior. American operators, uninterested in the Blancs' loss-leader economics, kept the double zero — some early wheels even carried an eagle pocket as a third house number — and streamlined the game for speed: simpler layouts, players buying distinct colored chips, faster spins. The result is the split that still defines the game: the American wheel with 38 pockets and a 5.26% edge, and the European wheel with 37 pockets and a 2.70% edge. Same payouts, same bets, nearly double the cost — a 200-year-old reminder that the first skill in roulette is choosing the right wheel.

System players and biased-wheel hunters

Roulette's mystique bred two famous breeds of player. System players chased betting progressions — the martingale doubling system above all — and populated legend, like the Englishman Charles Wells, who broke the bank at Monte Carlo in 1891 and inspired a music-hall song before dying broke. In the early 1990s Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo repeated the feat statistically in Madrid, logging thousands of spins and betting computer-identified biased numbers until casinos re-engineered their equipment and courts ruled his method legal. Both stories carry the same lesson: the only players who ever genuinely beat roulette did it by finding physical defects, not by pattern or progression.

The RNG era — and its trust problem

From the mid-1990s roulette moved online, with a pseudo-random number generator replacing the rotor and ball. Digital wheels eliminated mechanical bias entirely — no worn frets, no tilted spindles, nothing for a modern Jagger to find.
