How to Play Baccarat
Baccarat is the easiest game in the casino to play and one of the hardest to explain, which is backwards from how most people assume it works. You place a bet on Player, Banker or Tie, two hands are dealt, fixed rules decide whether either draws a third card, and the higher total wins. That is the entire game. You never choose anything after the bet — which is exactly why nobody can misplay a hand, and why the edge you accept when you place the chip is the edge you actually get.

Aces count 1. Cards 2 through 9 count face value. Tens, jacks, queens and kings all count zero. A hand's total is the sum of its cards modulo 10, so you only ever care about the last digit: 9 + 8 is 17, which scores 7. This is the single rule that trips up newcomers, and once it clicks the rest of the game is trivial. There is no bust in baccarat — you cannot go over, because the count wraps. The best possible total is 9, and if either side holds 8 or 9 on its first two cards that is a natural: the hand ends immediately, no third cards, highest total wins. Naturals resolve roughly one hand in six, which is part of why the game moves so fast.
The five bets, and what they really cost
Banker pays 1:1 less a 5% commission on wins and carries a 1.06% house edge — the lowest edge of any bet at Llamabet, and one of the lowest in any casino anywhere. Player pays a clean 1:1 at 1.24%. Tie pays 8:1 but carries a brutal 14.36% edge. Player Pair and Banker Pair each pay 11:1 at 10.36%. The two main bets are genuinely excellent; the other three are entertainment you pay a premium for, and we would rather say that plainly than let the table layout imply all five spots are equal. One detail matters enormously: on a tie, Player and Banker bets PUSH rather than lose — your stake comes back. That push is the entire reason the two main bets have such small edges, because roughly one hand in ten is a refund rather than a loss.
Why Banker is commissioned
Banker acts second, seeing Player's third card before deciding its own, and that information advantage means Banker wins 45.86% of hands against Player's 44.62%, with 9.52% tied. Uncommissioned, backing Banker would be a positive-expectation bet and the casino would be running a charity. The 5% commission on Banker wins claws that back and lands the edge at 1.06%. Players sometimes avoid Banker because the commission feels like a penalty — it is the opposite. Even after paying it, Banker is the better bet, and the commission only applies to wins, never to your stake.
The third-card rules, which are not your problem
Nobody chooses whether to draw. If neither side has a natural, Player draws on 0 through 5 and stands on 6 or 7. If Player stood, Banker follows the same rule. If Player drew, Banker's decision depends on its own total and the value of Player's third card: Banker always draws on 0, 1 or 2; draws on 3 unless Player's card was an 8; draws on 4 against a 2 through 7; draws on 5 against a 4 through 7; draws on 6 only against a 6 or 7; and always stands on 7. Memorise it if you enjoy that sort of thing, but you will never be asked to apply it. The dealer — here, the settlement code — applies it identically every hand, which is precisely what makes a baccarat hand a pure function of the shoe. That property is why baccarat is the easiest casino game to verify after the fact: replay the shoe and you replay the hand exactly, with no decision branch to reconstruct.

No, and that is a feature. Once your bet is placed the drawing rules are fixed and the outcome is determined by the shoe. There is no basic strategy to learn as in blackjack and no way to misplay a hand.
